A Gentleman in Moscow

Amor Towles’s novel A Gentleman in Moscow begins in 1922, when Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov is sentenced by a Bolshevik tribunal to house arrest inside Moscow’s grand Metropol Hotel. His crime is essentially his aristocratic pedigree, captured in a poem attributed to him, and his punishment is lifelong confinement within the hotel’s walls rather than a prison cell or firing squad. Stripped of his title and his suite, he is moved to a cramped attic room, where he must rebuild a life from the rituals, relationships, and small consolations available inside a single building. The novel’s distinctive framework is this hotel-as-world: the Metropol becomes a miniature Russia across three decades of Soviet history, from the New Economic Policy through Stalinism to the post-war years. Rostov’s world narrows to specific spaces and characters—the lobby, the restaurant, the barber shop, the seamstress’s quarters, the concierge desk—and to figures such as Nina, a young girl who befriends him and later leaves her daughter Sofia in his care; the chef Emile and the maître d’ Vasily; and a cast of hotel staff and guests whose fortunes shift with the regime outside. Towles structures the book by year and by episode, using Rostov’s confined vantage to observe how history seeps through the hotel’s doors. The Count’s response is a philosophy of cultivated purpose: he becomes a waiter, a mentor, and eventually a surrogate father, finding meaning through routine, friendship, and attentiveness rather than escape. The novel is not an adventure of movement but of endurance, wit, and the deliberate maintenance of grace under narrowing circumstances, ending with a carefully prepared plan whose nature remains part of the book’s resolution.
