A Little Life

Hanya Yanagihara’s second novel, A Little Life, published in 2015, follows four college friends who settle in New York City: Willem, an actor; JB, a painter; Malcolm, an architect; and Jude, a lawyer. Though the group shares the narrative’s early sections, the novel gradually narrows its focus to Jude St. Francis, whose traumatic past and self-harm reshape every relationship around him. The book is structured in seven numbered parts rather than conventional chapters, tracing the men from their twenties into middle age across roughly three decades. Yanagihara withholds the specifics of Jude’s history for hundreds of pages, revealing it through flashbacks and clinical asides, a deliberate architecture of delayed disclosure. Its distinctive frameworks include the intense, almost familial bond among the four men; the professional worlds of art, architecture, acting, and law; and the recurring motif of Jude’s limp and unexplained scars. Key secondary figures include Harold Stein, the law professor who eventually adopts the adult Jude, and Andy Contractor, the physician who treats him. The novel’s settings range from a Boston college, to Manhattan lofts and SoHo galleries, to a rural upstate home. Yanagihara renders New York as both refuge and pressure chamber. The book’s treatment of abuse, addiction, and recovery is explicit and unsparing, which made it a commercial success and a frequent subject of debate about suffering in literary fiction. It was shortlisted for the 2015 Booker Prize.
