A People's History of the United States

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, first published in 1980, retells American history from the perspective of ordinary people rather than presidents, generals, and industrialists. Zinn, a historian and political activist, explicitly frames the book as a counter-narrative to traditional textbooks, arguing that the nation’s past is defined by class conflict, racial oppression, and popular resistance as much as by celebrated leaders and achievements. The book moves chronologically from Columbus’s arrival in the Americas through the late twentieth century, but each chapter foregrounds dissenters and victims of power. Early sections examine the enslavement and slaughter of indigenous peoples, the grievances of indentured servants and colonial workers, and the role of poor farmers and urban laborers in the American Revolution. Later chapters cover the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage, the labor struggles of the Industrial Revolution, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and Watergate, consistently emphasizing grassroots organizing over top-down reform. Zinn’s distinctive method is what he calls “people’s history,” which draws on letters, memoirs, court records, speeches, and songs to recover voices excluded from standard accounts. Recurring themes include the myth of American exceptionalism, the use of armed force to suppress strikes and rebellions, and the gap between democratic rhetoric and economic inequality. He also highlights figures such as the labor organizer Mother Jones, the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and the civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, alongside anonymous strikers, slaves, and protesters. Though widely assigned in schools and colleges, the book has drawn criticism for its overt political stance and selective emphasis. It remains a landmark work of revisionist history, shaping how generations of readers think about power, resistance, and whose stories count.
