About Face

Alan Cooper’s *About Face* is a foundational text on interaction design, first published in 1995 and revised in later editions with Robert Reimann and David Cronin. Cooper, often called the father of Visual Basic, argues that software should be designed around the goals of the people using it rather than around the internal logic of the technology or the whims of programmers. The book’s central framework is goal-directed design. Cooper distinguishes between goals, which are the user’s underlying motivations, and tasks, which are the specific steps taken to reach them, and insists that good interfaces serve goals while hiding unnecessary complexity. It introduces the concept of personas: fictional but research-grounded archetypes representing distinct user behaviors, such as the “perpetual intermediate” who knows enough to be dangerous but not enough to be an expert. Cooper also popularized “perpetual intermediates” as the true target audience for most software, rejecting designs aimed at either novices or experts alone. A recurring argument concerns the “inmates running the asylum,” Cooper’s critique of letting engineers and programmers make design decisions based on implementation convenience. He advocates separating design from development, giving designers authority over behavior and interaction before code is written. The book examines interface paradigms, including the desktop metaphor, direct manipulation, and the distinction between sovereign and transient applications. Later editions add material on mobile and touch interfaces, Web design, and design research methods. Throughout, *About Face* emphasizes that polite software should remember user choices, avoid unnecessary questions, and respect the user’s attention. It remains a core reference in user experience and human-computer interaction curricula.
