Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton, published in 2004, is a comprehensive biography of the American founding father whose vision of a strong central government shaped the young United States. Chernow traces Hamilton’s improbable rise from an illegitimate childhood in the Caribbean, through his service as George Washington’s wartime aide-de-camp, to his tenure as the first secretary of the Treasury. The book’s central argument is that Hamilton, long overshadowed by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, was the indispensable architect of American capitalism and federal power. Chernow details Hamilton’s authorship of the majority of the Federalist Papers, his creation of a national bank and a funded public debt, and his promotion of manufacturing in the Report on Manufactures. A major thread is the bitter rivalry with Jefferson and James Madison, which produced the first party system. Chernow also examines Hamilton’s marriage to Elizabeth Schuyler, his affair with Maria Reynolds, and his 1804 duel with Aaron Burr. The biography makes extensive use of Hamilton’s personal letters to show his ambition, insecurity, and political genius. Chernow portrays his subject as a pragmatic nationalist who distrusted populist democracy, as well as an opponent of slavery who nonetheless compromised with slaveholders. The book won the George Washington Book Prize and inspired the Broadway musical Hamilton. It remains a standard scholarly account of its subject’s life and legacy.
