All the Light We Cannot See

Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel All the Light We Cannot See unfolds across the 1930s and 1940s, primarily in the walled French coastal town of Saint-Malo and in Germany. Its two protagonists alternate in short, interwoven chapters: Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind Parisian girl who flees with her father to Saint-Malo to live with her reclusive great-uncle, and Werner Pfennig, a white-haired orphan from the coal-mining town of Zollverein who is conscripted into the Hitler Youth and later sent to the Eastern Front as a radio operator. The novel’s distinctive framework is its braided, nonchronological structure, with chapters dated and frequently only a page or two long, some set during the Allied bombing of Saint-Malo in August 1944. Doerr uses radios and radio waves as a central motif: Werner’s talent for repairing receivers earns him a place at a brutal Nazi military academy, while Marie-Laure’s great-uncle broadcasts clandestine resistance transmissions from a hidden attic. A legendary diamond, the Sea of Flames, believed to carry a curse, and a miniature model of Saint-Malo that Marie-Laure’s father builds for her to navigate by touch, tie the two storylines together. The title refers to the electromagnetic spectrum’s invisible light, but it also concerns the unseen connections between people. The novel is a work of historical fiction about perception, technology, morality, and chance rather than a self-help book or argument-driven nonfiction.
