In An Everyone Culture, Harvard adult-development scholar Robert Kegan and co-author Lisa Laskow Lahey argue that most organizations waste enormous human potential by treating employees’ growth as separate from their work. Their central claim, drawn from decades of developmental psychology, is that adults continue to develop through identifiable stages of meaning-making, yet few workplaces are designed to support that development deliberately. They also address the difficulties of sustaining such a culture, including the fear and resistance that arise when people are asked to reveal weaknesses. The book concludes with guidance for leaders who want to experiment with DDO principles in their own organizations, emphasizing that the approach requires long-term commitment rather than a quick program.
