Dan Brown’s novel *Angels & Demons* introduces Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who is summoned to a Swiss research facility, CERN, after the apparent murder of a physicist and the theft of a canister of antimatter. Each element corresponds to a location associated with Bernini’s art in Rome, including churches and plazas such as Santa Maria del Popolo and Piazza Navona. The antagonist is a mysterious assassin working for the Illuminati, while a camerlengo, the papal chamberlain, becomes a central figure during the interregnum. The book explores tensions between faith and science, the history of the Illuminati, and Vatican ritual. *Angels & Demons* established Robert Langdon as a recurring protagonist and introduced the fast-paced, clue-driven thriller formula Brown later used in *The Da Vinci Code*.
