Battle Cry of Freedom

James M. McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era," published in 1988, is widely regarded as the definitive single-volume history of the American Civil War. Subtitled "The Civil War Era," the book covers the period from the Mexican-American War through Reconstruction, though its narrative core is the war itself.
