Beartown

Fredrik Backman’s novel Beartown is set in a small, declining forest town whose identity and hopes rest almost entirely on its junior ice hockey team. The community’s passion for hockey creates belonging and opportunity, but also encourages conformity and the protection of valuable players. The story follows the events surrounding a party after a crucial game, examining how a town chooses to respond when a beloved figure is accused and when a victim is one of its own. Beartown explores the cost of misplaced loyalty and the courage required to speak when the community would rather stay quiet.
