Being and Nothingness

Jean-Paul Sartre’s *Being and Nothingness* (1943), subtitled *An Essay on Phenomenological Ontology*, is a foundational text of existentialism written during the German occupation of France. The book argues that consciousness is not a thing but a intentional activity directed at objects, and that human reality is characterized by a radical freedom that precedes any fixed essence. Sartre distinguishes between being-in-itself, the inert, undifferentiated mode of objects, and being-for-itself, the conscious mode of humans, which is defined by lack and negation. This gap introduces nothingness into the world, most famously illustrated by the example of looking for a friend in a café: the absence is not a mere logical negation but a presence of absence perceived by consciousness. Central to the work is the concept of bad faith, the self-deception by which people deny their freedom and pretend to be determined things, as in Sartre’s example of a waiter who plays at being a waiter. The book also explores the look of the Other, showing how shame and objectification arise when one is seen, and how interpersonal relations are inherently conflictual. Sartre analyzes the body, desire, and the project of being, concluding that humans are a futile passion to become God, a synthesis of in-itself and for-itself that is impossible. The text ends with a promise of a future ethics, which Sartre never fully delivered in this work. Its dense phenomenological descriptions and technical vocabulary make it a demanding but pivotal contribution to twentieth-century philosophy.
