Beyond Good and Evil

Friedrich Nietzsche’s *Beyond Good and Evil* (1886) is a philosophical work subtitled “Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future.” Written after *Thus Spoke Zarathustra*, it gathers 296 aphorisms across nine parts plus a closing poem, and it attacks the foundational assumptions of Western philosophy and morality. Nietzsche argues that philosophers have disguised unconscious prejudices as objective truths, singling out Plato, Kant, and Christian moralists for privileging equality, pity, and self-denial. He contends that “good” and “evil” are not universal categories but historically contingent values, and he distinguishes a “master morality,” which esteems strength, nobility, and self-affirmation, from a “slave morality,” which revalues weakness and resentment as virtue. Central to the book is the “will to power,” which Nietzsche presents as the fundamental drive underlying life, knowledge, and culture, not merely a political craving. He develops the idea of the *Übermensch* only indirectly here, focusing instead on the “free spirit” who can question inherited values. The fourth part, “Maxims and Interludes,” strings together sharp psychological observations, while the fifth, “Natural History of Morals,” examines how moral systems arise from social conditions. The ninth part, “What Is Noble?,” contrasts the herd with genuinely independent individuals. Other recurring targets include nationalism, anti-Semitism, democratic leveling, and the growing authority of science, which Nietzsche both respects and suspects. He proposes “philosophizing with a hammer,” testing idols by sounding them out, and insists that future philosophers must create values rather than merely catalog them. The book is deliberately aphoristic and unsystematic, resisting summary, but its key claims about perspectivism, the genealogy of morals, and the revaluation of all values shaped twentieth-century existentialism, psychoanalysis, and postmodern thought.
