In *Blink*, Malcolm Gladwell explores how humans make split-second decisions — judgments that occur in the first two seconds of encountering something — and why those snap judgments are often remarkably accurate yet sometimes catastrophically wrong. Drawing on psychology and neuroscience research, Gladwell calls this rapid cognition "thin-slicing": the ability to filter the most important signals from a narrow slice of experience. The book opens with the Getty Museum's purchase of a supposedly ancient kouros statue. Several art experts sensed something wrong within seconds of viewing it, despite scientific testing that suggested authenticity. That intuition eventually proved correct. Gladwell contrasts such expert rapid judgment with cases where unconscious bias derails it. In his chapter on "the Warren Harding error," he examines how tall, commanding-looking men succeed politically regardless of ability, and he recounts the Implicit Association Test, which reveals hidden associations between race and negative concepts. He also discusses police shootings, including the 1999 Amadou Diallo case, to show how high-pressure situations cause errors in rapid cognition. Other chapters describe psychologist John Gottman's ability to predict whether a marriage will survive by observing a couple's interaction for just a few minutes, and tennis coach Vic Braden's inability to explain how he knew when a player would double-fault. Gladwell examines speed dating, military war games, and the emergency-room triage practices of Chicago physician Brendan Reilly. A recurring concern is "mind reading" — how we interpret others' expressions — and how autism can impair that ability. The final chapters argue that we can train and structure our environments to improve snap decisions, while acknowledging that stress and time pressure often make them worse.
