Blood Meridian

Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, or The Evening Redness in the West, is a 1985 anti-Western novel set along the U.S.–Mexico border in the years around 1850. The book follows a teenage runaway known only as “the kid,” who drifts from Tennessee into northern Mexico and joins a scalp-hunting expedition led by John Joel Glanton, a historical filibuster, and his terrifying chief adviser, Judge Holden. The novel is structured as a picaresque of escalating violence rather than a conventional redemption arc. Its distinctive framework is the Glanton gang’s contract with Mexican authorities to kill Apaches for bounties, a mission that degrades into indiscriminate slaughter of Native Americans, Mexicans, and Americans alike. McCarthy renders this in famously spare, biblical prose, with chapter-like episodes that read as brutal parables: a revival tent conflagration, a desert crossing, a ferry ambush on the Colorado River, and a long pursuit across the desert. Judge Holden, a seven-foot-tall, hairless, polymathic figure, delivers sermons on war as the ultimate game and on humanity’s nature, becoming the novel’s philosophical antagonist. The setting is the arid borderlands of Texas, Chihuahua, Sonora, and California, and the book draws on historical sources including Samuel Chamberlain’s memoir My Confession. McCarthy’s themes include manifest destiny, the commerce of violence, and the impossibility of moral order on the frontier. It is not a hopeful or redemptive western; it is a sustained meditation on cruelty, told with archaic diction and unflinching detail. It remains McCarthy’s most controversial and influential work, often ranked among the great American novels of the late twentieth century.
