Born a Crime

Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime is a memoir set in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa, where his very existence was illegal: as the mixed-race son of a Black Xhosa mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, and a white Swiss father, Robert, he was classified as “coloured” under a regime that criminalized interracial unions. The book’s title comes directly from that legal reality, and each chapter opens with a brief historical or social framing of apartheid’s absurd, dehumanizing logic before narrating how it shaped his childhood. The central protagonist is young Trevor, a hyperactive, multilingual hustler who survives by code-switching among English, Xhosa, Zulu, Tswana, Afrikaans, and Tsotsitaal, since language in the book is both a tool of exclusion and his primary means of belonging. Patricia is the other towering figure: deeply religious, fiercely independent, and determined to raise her son outside the limits the state assigned him, she frequently breaks the law to do so. Recurring threads include his grandmother’s rural Transkei household, his mother’s abusive relationship with Abel, his stints selling pirated CDs and running small schemes, and his time in a predominantly white Catholic school where he was often the only non-white student. The narrative alternates between sharply funny set pieces, such as being thrown from a moving car by his mother to escape danger, and sober reflections on poverty, domestic violence, and racial classification. Born a Crime is less a chronological coming-of-age story than a collection of linked episodes showing how apartheid’s categories followed people long after the laws were repealed, and how humour and language became survival strategies.
