Built to Last

Built to Last by Jim Collins, co-authored with Jerry I. Porras, examines why a select group of visionary companies have outperformed the general stock market by a wide margin over decades. Drawing on a six-year research project at Stanford University, the book compares eighteen enduring firms—including Disney, 3M, Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble, and Johnson & Johnson—against a matched set of comparison companies that shared similar origins but failed to achieve the same longevity. The central argument is that lasting greatness stems less from a charismatic leader or a single great idea than from the deliberate preservation of a core ideology paired with relentless stimulation of progress, a duality the authors call "preserve the core and stimulate progress." The research identifies several counterintuitive findings. Visionary companies often succeed not because of a brilliant original plan but through what Collins and Porras term "Big Hairy Audacious Goals," or BHAGs, which channel effort and commitment. They also reject the "Tyranny of the OR" in favor of the "Genius of the AND," embracing seemingly contradictory aims such as stability and change, or profit and purpose. Other concepts include clock building versus time telling, whereby leaders build organizations that can thrive beyond any individual, and the idea that visionary firms cultivate strong, distinctive cultures rather than chasing short-term profits. The book also introduces "cult-like cultures" and "home-grown management" as recurring traits. Published in 1994, Built to Last became a foundational text in management and organizational behavior, distilling its findings into frameworks still cited in discussions of corporate longevity and strategy.
