In Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, Isabel Wilkerson argues that America’s racial hierarchy is better understood as a caste system, a rigid ranking of human value that predates and outlasts individual prejudice. Comparing the United States to India’s historical caste order and to Nazi Germany’s racial laws, she identifies shared pillars that sustain such systems: divine or natural justification, heredity, endogamy, occupational segregation, dehumanization, and violence. The book’s central metaphor is an old house whose hidden structural damage must be inspected and repaired rather than merely painted over. Wilkerson builds the narrative from reported history, personal reflection, and interviews. She recounts the lives of people assigned to the bottom and top of the American order, including Black Americans navigating everyday indignities and a white woman who begins to recognize the unearned advantages of her position. She revisits the 1944 death of Recy Taylor and the lynching of Emmett Till as episodes that expose caste enforcement, and she examines how the Nazi regime studied American Jim Crow laws while deciding how far its own racial legislation could go. She also traces the eight “pillars of caste” through chapters such as “The Arbitrary Construction of Human Divisions” and “The container we have built for you,” showing how caste manifests in politics, medicine, and ordinary manners. The book extends its frame to contemporary events, arguing that the 2016 election and the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare durable caste divisions. Wilkerson closes by suggesting that Americans must first name the system, then dismantle it through radical empathy and collective reckoning, much as one would repair a failing house’s foundation.
