Catch-22

Joseph Heller’s *Catch-22*, published in 1961, is a satirical war novel set during World War II on the Mediterranean island of Pianosa, where the American 256th Squadron is stationed. The book follows Captain John Yossarian, a bombardier who has flown dozens of missions and is desperately trying to be grounded as insane—only to collide with the titular bureaucratic trap: a concern for one’s own safety in the face of real dangers is proof of sanity, so anyone who asks to be grounded is sane and must keep flying. That circular logic, "Catch-22," becomes the organizing principle of the novel’s world, an absurdist framework in which every rule can be invoked to deny escape and every authority figure bends language to consolidate power. Against this backdrop, Heller assembles a vast cast—the opportunistic mess officer Milo Minderbinder, who builds a global syndicate and eventually bombs his own squadron for profit; the relentlessly obedient Lieutenant Scheisskopf; the profiteering and paranoid officers who keep raising the mission count. The narrative unfolds non-chronologically, circling back through the same events from shifting angles until their full horror emerges. Heller uses dark comedy, repetition, and fractured chronology to attack military bureaucracy, capitalism, and the language of institutional authority. The novel’s influence is so wide that "catch-22" entered English as a term for any no-win, self-contradictory dilemma. Its structure and themes made it a defining work of postwar American satire.
