Andrew Roberts’s *Churchill* is a single-volume biography of Winston Churchill that compresses the statesman’s eighty-nine years into a deliberately paced narrative built from the full range of archival sources, including the Churchill papers, War Cabinet minutes, and previously underused diaries. Roberts organizes the book around Churchill’s own recurring self-conception: that his life was a preparation for a great crisis, and that the 1930s years “in the wilderness” were not a fallow period but the forging of the arguments he would use against appeasement.
