Stacy Schiff’s *Cleopatra: A Life* is a Pulitzer Prize–winning biography that reconstructs the life of Cleopatra VII, the last active Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt, while directly challenging the hostile Roman sources—chiefly Plutarch, Dio Cassius, and Cicero—through which her story has reached us. Schiff’s central argument is that Cleopatra was a shrewd, multilingual, and highly educated monarch and administrator, not the seductive temptress of Augustan propaganda, and that the “wanton” image was largely manufactured by Octavian to justify his war against her and Mark Antony. The book is set principally in Alexandria, a glittering Hellenistic capital, and moves across the Mediterranean to Rome, Tarsus, and Actium. Schiff organizes the narrative around the major phases of Cleopatra’s reign: her ascent alongside her father Ptolemy XII Auletes and her brothers; her liaison with Julius Caesar, which secured her throne and produced her son Caesarion; her years as a capable ruler of a wealthy Egypt; and her fateful alliance with Mark Antony, culminating in the naval defeat at Actium and her death in 30 BCE. Rather than treating her as a mere appendage to Roman men, Schiff foregrounds her as a political actor managing debts, grain, and dynastic rivalries. A recurring framework is the gap between evidence and legend: Schiff repeatedly notes where sources are silent, partisan, or contradictory, and treats Alexandria’s lost libraries and vanished archives as a central problem for any biographer. The result is a vivid, scholarly portrait of a queen who was, in Schiff’s telling, both a pragmatist and a symbol.
