In Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, Jared Diamond asks why some civilizations destroy their environmental foundations while others adapt and survive. Diamond examines Easter Island, where deforestation and resource depletion undermined a complex statue-building society; the Norse Greenland colony, whose refusal to adopt Inuit hunting and fishing practices contributed to its demise amid a changing climate; and the Maya, whose dense population and environmental stress intersected with drought and warfare.
