Color and Light

James Gurney’s *Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter* (2010) is a practical art instruction book born from the popular “Color and Light” column Gurney wrote for *International Artist* magazine. Unlike many painting manuals, it focuses less on step-by-step projects and more on understanding why light behaves as it does, so artists can apply that knowledge to any subject. The book is organized into thematic sections rather than a single linear course. Early chapters cover the physics of light and the eye, including the color wheel, gamut mapping, and the distinction between additive and subtractive mixing. Gurney introduces terms such as “color constancy,” the tendency of the brain to perceive an object’s local color even under colored light, and “sky blue” effects like Rayleigh scattering that explain why shadows are often bluer than expected. He distinguishes between light sources—sunlight, overcast, window light, firelight, fluorescent, and bioluminescence—and shows how each produces different shadow shapes, edge qualities, and color temperatures. He analyzes works by masters such as Monet, Sargent, and Sorolla to demonstrate atmospheric perspective, reflected light, and the “three-value” grouping of light, halftone, and shadow. Gurney discusses practical studio setups, color mixing palettes, and the difference between local color and optical color. Throughout, he emphasizes observation over formula, encouraging artists to test effects outdoors and in the studio.
