Atul Gawande’s *Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science* is a 2002 collection drawn from his experiences as a surgical resident at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Across chapters grouped into three sections—Fallibility, Mystery, and Uncertainty—Gawande argues that medicine is far messier than its public image admits, and that error, intuition, and unknowns are intrinsic to care rather than aberrations. Gawande profiles odd figures like a doctor who can diagnose by smell, and he revisits the tension between physicians’ gut instinct and evidence-based protocols. His recurring arguments: medicine must acknowledge fallibility through systems like morbidity and mortality conferences; doctors should study near-misses; and uncertainty demands humility. The book helped popularize the patient-safety conversation later advanced by Gawande’s *The Checklist Manifesto*.
