Conversations with God

Conversations with God is a trilogy of books by Neale Donald Walsch, beginning with the 1995 volume *Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue, Book 1*. The series emerged from Walsch's account of an intense period of frustration in 1992, when, after years of failed ventures and a broken marriage, he began writing an angry letter to God and found himself receiving what he experienced as automatic, dictated answers. The books are presented as a verbatim dialogue between Walsch and a divine voice, with Walsch's questions printed in plain text and the responses set in bold or indented type, so the reader follows an unfolding exchange rather than a conventional argument. Book 1 opens with personal questions about prosperity, relationships, and why life is so hard, then moves into metaphysics. The central ideas include the claim that God does not judge, punish, or have a will that humans must obey, and that the purpose of life is not to learn lessons but to remember and experience who you already are. Walsch's God repeatedly rejects the concept of a wrathful deity and argues that fear-based religion teaches separation, while the true message is unity. Later sections discuss reincarnation, the soul's choice of its circumstances, and the idea that death is a transition rather than an ending. Book 2 expands to planetary and social questions—time, space, politics, sexuality, education, and how humanity might create a world of peace—and Book 3, the longest, addresses universal cosmology, other civilizations, and the nature of the soul. Across all three, the recurring framework is that thought creates reality, that consciousness is the ground of being, and that love rather than judgment is the unifying principle. The books sold millions of copies and became a defining text of 1990s New Age spirituality, later followed by Walsch's *Conversations with God* companions and the film adaptation.
