Dark Night of the Soul

Dark Night of the Soul is a 16th-century spiritual treatise by the Spanish Carmelite mystic and poet John of the Cross, written while he was imprisoned in Toledo and later published in 1618. The work is a prose commentary on his own poem "The Dark Night," and it describes the difficult process by which a soul is purged of attachments and prepared for union with God. John's central framework distinguishes two phases of the "dark night": the night of the senses and the night of the spirit. In the first, beginners who have taken pleasure in religious consolations lose all sweetness in prayer and devotion, finding dryness and aridity instead. This is not punishment, John argues, but God's way of weaning the soul from sensory satisfaction so it can advance. The second, more severe night afflicts those further along, stripping the spirit of its sense of God's presence, leaving it feeling abandoned and worthless. John uses the metaphor of fire consuming a log: just as fire first blackens and dries wood before it can transform it into flame, the divine fire purges imperfections before illuminating the soul. The book unfolds as a series of explanations of stanzas from the poem, with John addressing the nature of purgative contemplation, the seven deadly sins as they appear in beginners, the role of faith as a dark guide, and the apparent absence of God during trial. His argument is that true spiritual progress requires this dismantling of self-reliance and consolation-seeking, moving the soul from meditation to contemplation. Widely read across Christian traditions and beyond, it shaped later mystical theology and remains a foundational text on spiritual desolation, detachment, and the inward journey.
