Deschooling Society

Ivan Illich’s *Deschooling Society*, published in 1971, argues that institutionalized schooling has failed and that society must be “deschooled.” Writing from his base at the Centro Intercultural de Documentación (CIDOC) in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Illich contends that schools teach a hidden curriculum of consumption, dependence, and graded privilege rather than genuine learning. He distinguishes schooling from education, insisting that most real learning happens informally, through webs of relations rather than compulsory classrooms. The book’s core proposal is a set of “learning webs” or “opportunities for learning” that would replace schools. Illich outlines four networks: reference services to educational objects (libraries, labs, tools made publicly available); skill exchanges (people listing what they can teach and what they want to learn); peer-matching (connecting people with common interests); and reference services to educators-at-large (counselors, guides, and mentors). He pairs this with a critique of professionalized teaching, arguing that certification monopolies manufacture scarcity and stifle self-directed inquiry. He also attacks the idea of compulsory attendance and the equation of education with credentialing, calling instead for “convivial” institutions that maximize autonomy and interdependence. Illich draws on examples such as learning by apprenticeship, peer language learning, and decentralized community resources, though the book is chiefly polemical and programmatic rather than empirical in the social-science sense. Its arguments extend beyond pedagogy to economics, development, and institutional power, influencing later critiques of schooling, unschooling, and deschooling movements.
