Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides—collectively known as the Gang of Four—was published in 1994 and remains a foundational text in software engineering. The book catalogs 23 recurring solutions to common problems in object-oriented design, presenting each as a named pattern with a consistent structure: intent, motivation, applicability, participants, collaborations, consequences, and sample code. The patterns are organized into three categories. Creational patterns, such as Abstract Factory, Builder, Singleton, and Factory Method, address object instantiation. Structural patterns, including Adapter, Composite, Decorator, Façade, and Proxy, deal with composing classes and objects. Behavioral patterns, among them Observer, Strategy, Command, Iterator, and State, concern algorithms and the assignment of responsibilities between objects. Each pattern is described using a template that also covers known uses and related patterns, helping readers see how the solutions interrelate. A central argument of the book is that experienced designers reuse successful designs rather than deriving every structure from first principles. By giving these solutions shared names—a vocabulary the authors call a pattern language—the catalog lets developers communicate architectural intent concisely. The text grounds its examples in realistic scenarios, such as a document editor and a maze game, and uses C++ and Smalltalk to illustrate implementations, while noting that the patterns apply across object-oriented languages. The authors also describe how to select among patterns, how patterns can be combined, and how some evolve into others. While later critiques questioned certain patterns, particularly Singleton, the book popularized the pattern movement and shaped how object-oriented software is designed, taught, and discussed.
