Excellent Sheep

In Excellent Sheep, William Deresiewicz delivers a pointed critique of elite American higher education and the culture of hyper-achievement that feeds it. Drawing on his own decade teaching English at Yale, Deresiewicz argues that institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton admit extraordinarily talented students and then train them to be compliant careerists rather than independent thinkers. He calls these students "excellent sheep": outwardly accomplished, inwardly anxious, and unable to say why they are doing what they do beyond pleasing admissions committees and future employers. The book identifies what Deresiewicz terms "the system"—an escalating admissions arms race that begins in childhood and rewards conformity, resume-building, and risk aversion. He describes the "pyramid" structure of elite schooling, in which a narrow track leads from prestigious high schools to prestigious colleges to prestigious graduate programs and, ultimately, into finance, consulting, and law, regardless of genuine interest. A central argument is that elite education has become "a credentialing system" that sorts winners and losers without teaching students how to think critically, live meaningfully, or engage with others across social divides. Deresiewicz critiques the corporatization of universities, the decline of the humanities, the rise of adjunct labor, and the way prestigious schools market themselves as luxury brands. He also examines the psychological toll on students—perfectionism, depression, fear of failure—and the ways parents and counselors reinforce the pressure. In later sections he defends the value of a genuine liberal arts education, arguing it should cultivate self-knowledge, moral seriousness, and the capacity for solitude and reflection rather than mere preparation for a career. The book closes by urging students to resist the prestige treadmill and choose lives of purpose over resumes of achievement.
