Flash Boys

Michael Lewis’s Flash Boys is a work of narrative nonfiction about high-frequency trading and the structure of modern American equity markets. Published in 2014, the book follows Brad Katsuyama, a Royal Bank of Canada trader who notices that his large orders inexplicably fail to execute at the prices shown on his screen, and eventually traces the problem to predatory speed-based practices. Lewis’s central argument is that U.S. stock markets, though publicly portrayed as fair and efficient, are rigged in favor of a small group of fast traders. The book popularizes the term “flash boys” for these high-speed firms and explains mechanisms such as front-running by speed, latency arbitrage, and the role of dark pools, including one operated by Goldman Sachs. A key figure is Sergey Aleynikov, a former Goldman programmer prosecuted for stealing code, whose case Lewis uses to illustrate how confusing and aggressive the legal response to high-frequency trading became. The narrative also follows the founding of IEX, the Investors Exchange, by Katsuyama and allies, built with a “speed bump” of 350 microseconds designed to neutralize latency advantages. Lewis details their efforts to win regulatory approval and credibility. A distinctive setpiece involves a 2012 meeting hosted by hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, where exchanges and brokers were persuaded to answer pointed questions about order types and routing. Another is the construction of a secret fiber route between Chicago and New Jersey by Spread Networks, which Lewis presents as evidence of the arms race for milliseconds. The book became a bestseller and sparked public debate, though some market participants and academics disputed its claims about the extent and harm of high-frequency trading.
