Eric Berne’s *Games People Play*, published in 1964, introduced transactional analysis to a general readership. Berne, a Canadian-born psychiatrist, argued that social interactions can be analyzed as exchanges of “strokes” between three ego states he called Parent, Adult, and Child. A “game” in his framework is a recurring, ulterior-transaction sequence with a payoff: a predictable social maneuver that ends in a familiar bad feeling. The book’s first half lays out the structural analysis of ego states and transactions, then defines games and their roles. Berne categorizes games by setting and stakes: life games, marital games, party games, sexual games, underworld games, and consulting-room games. Widely cited examples include “Why Don’t You—Yes But,” in which a person solicits advice only to reject every suggestion; “Ain’t It Awful,” where participants bond over shared complaints; “Now I’ve Got You, You Son of a Bitch,” built on justified anger; and “Kick Me,” in which a person invites mistreatment and then feels victimized. Marital games include “Frigid Woman” and “Harried Housewife.” Berne also describes “pastimes” and “rituals” as lower-intensity forms of structured time, and “autonomy” as the goal of releasing oneself from game-playing through awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy. The final chapter examines game-free intimacy and the possibility of script-free living. Berne’s writing is clinical yet aphoristic, and the book became a bestseller, popularizing terms still used in psychology and popular culture. Critics noted its taxonomic lists and cultural assumptions of its era, but its central contribution—naming repetitive social transactions and their hidden payoffs—remains its distinctive contribution.
