Girls on the Edge

In *Girls on the Edge*, physician and psychologist Leonard Sax argues that girls in contemporary America are being pushed toward a set of converging crises that he calls the "five edges": sexual identity confusion, the rise of "girls who don't talk" (selective mutism and social withdrawal), the culture of binge drinking and partying, the epidemic of cyberbullying and online social cruelty, and the overdiagnosis and medication of normal developmental struggles. Sax, whose earlier book *Boys Adrift* diagnosed similar problems for boys, frames these as environmental rather than innate: something in the way girls are raised, educated, and immersed in digital culture is destabilizing their development. He points to specific phenomena, such as the "boy crisis" spilling over into girls' lives through what he calls the "culture of disrespect," the ubiquity of internet pornography shaping girls' expectations of sexuality, and the loss of free, unsupervised outdoor play in favor of structured, achievement-driven schedules. Sax also discusses the role of schools, media, and delayed maturation, arguing that girls are reaching puberty earlier while being treated as older than they are. His recommendations are concrete: delay smartphones and social media, protect sleep, restore recess and free play, and resist the pressure to medicate ordinary sadness or distractibility. Published in 2010, the book draws on Sax's clinical practice, research literature, and interviews with families to urge parents to push back against cultural forces rather than simply manage symptoms. It remains a widely cited parenting title for its five-edge framework and its direct challenge to screen-saturated, achievement-obsessed adolescence.
