Happy Place

Emily Henry’s novel *Happy Place* centers on Harriet Kilpatrick, a surgical resident, and Wyn Connor, a talented craftsman, who have been a couple since their college days at a small liberal arts school in Ohio. The story opens with a painful secret: despite years together and a long-standing group friendship, Harriet and Wyn have actually broken up, a split they have hidden from their closest friends. The reason for the deception is the annual weeklong getaway to a coastal Maine cottage in the town of Knott’s Harbor, a tradition shared with their friend group: Harriet’s best friend Sabrina, Sabrina’s partner Parth, their friend Cleo, and Cleo’s girlfriend Kimmy. This year the trip is especially significant because Sabrina and Parth are getting married, and the cottage, which belongs to Sabrina’s father, is being sold, making it the final summer in the beloved house. To avoid ruining the wedding and the last gathering in their happy place, Harriet and Wyn agree to pretend they are still together for the week. The pretense forces them into close quarters and constant performance, while Harriet also grapples with the demands of her residency and her people-pleasing tendencies, and Wyn faces his own ambivalence about his life in Montana and his family. The novel alternates between the present-day trip and flashbacks to earlier summers at the cottage, gradually revealing how the couple fell in love and why they drifted apart. Henry explores friendship, loyalty, grief over a shared place ending, and the pressure to appear happy while privately struggling. Rather than a self-help framework, the book uses the cottage and the friend group’s rituals as its emotional architecture, with the fake-dating premise driving the tension between Harriet and Wyn.
