In Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, Nir Eyal argues that the most successful consumer technologies succeed by deliberately engineering habit loops rather than relying on advertising or willpower. Drawing on behavioral psychology—particularly B.F. Skinner's work on variable rewards and research on the dopamine-driven "wanting" system—Eyal proposes the Hook Model, a four-phase cycle he calls Trigger, Action, Variable Reward, and Investment. External triggers such as notifications or app icons eventually give way to internal triggers, when an emotion like boredom, loneliness, or uncertainty automatically prompts a user to reach for a product. The action phase relies on Eyal's adaptation of B.J. Fogg's behavior model, which holds that behavior occurs when motivation, ability, and a prompt converge, pushing designers to reduce friction through simplicity. Variable rewards, delivered through what Eyal labels the tribe, the hunt, and the self, sustain engagement by exploiting the brain's craving for unpredictable outcomes. Finally, the investment phase asks users to put something into the product—data, content, followers, reputation—which stores value and loads the next trigger, making the loop more compelling over time. Eyal developed these ideas while teaching at Stanford's Graduate School of Business and consulting for companies in the emerging "persuasive technology" space, and the 2014 book grew out of that work. He frames the habit-building process as ethically neutral but insists that creators must use it responsibly, introducing the "manipulation matrix" to distinguish facilitating products from exploitative ones, and warning that habit-forming design can become a "dark pattern" when it harms users. Hooked is divided into chapters that walk through each phase of the model, with examples from companies such as Twitter, Instagram, and video games, and it closes with a builder's checklist for applying the framework, making it a widely cited handbook in product management and marketing circles.
