Hot, Flat, and Crowded

In *Hot, Flat, and Crowded*, Thomas L. Friedman argues that the convergence of three forces—climate change ("hot"), the rise of a global middle class flattening competitive and consumption patterns ("flat"), and rapid population growth ("crowded")—has created an urgent crisis and, simultaneously, a historic economic opportunity. Published in 2008 and subtitled "Why We Need a Green Revolution—and How It Can Renew America," the book extends the globalization analysis of Friedman's earlier *The World Is Flat* into energy and environmental territory. Friedman's central prescription is what he calls "Geo-Greenism": a national strategy to make clean energy the next great engine of American prosperity, innovation, and national security. He develops several distinctive frameworks. "Code Green" is his term for the massive, wartime-scale mobilization he believes is required—comparable to the New Deal or the Apollo program—to decarbonize the economy. He introduces the idea of a "green revolution" driven by what he calls "ET" (energy technology), positioning it as the successor to the IT revolution. Friedman also popularizes the concept of "petropolitics," arguing that high oil prices strengthen authoritarian oil-exporting regimes and weaken democracies, while clean energy would shift that geopolitical balance. He contrasts America's consumption habits with countries like Denmark and China, using on-the-ground reporting from his travels. The book critiques both political parties for failing to treat energy as a systemic crisis and calls for a price on carbon, efficiency standards, and large-scale public investment in renewables. It spent time on bestseller lists and remains a widely cited entry in the literature on climate economics, though critics noted its length and sometimes repetitive rhetorical style. It was later updated in a revised edition.
