In How Not to Die, physician Michael Greger argues that the leading causes of premature death in the United States—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions—are largely preventable through diet and lifestyle. Greger, founder of the nonprofit NutritionFacts.org, structures the book in two parts. The first, "How Not to Die from...," devotes a chapter to each major killer, including heart disease, lung disease, brain disease, digestive cancers, infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease, blood cancers, kidney disease, breast cancer, suicidal depression, prostate cancer, Parkinson's disease, and iatrogenic causes. In each, he explains the underlying mechanisms and reviews peer-reviewed research on foods and habits that may prevent, slow, or reverse the condition. The second part, "How Not to Die," introduces Greger's "Daily Dozen"—a checklist of foods to eat every day, such as beans, berries, other fruits, cruciferous vegetables, greens, other vegetables, flaxseeds, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, whole grains, beverages, and exercise. He recommends building meals around these categories rather than counting calories or nutrients. Throughout, Greger cites scientific studies rather than personal anecdotes, discussing topics like the effect of dietary fiber on cholesterol, the role of turmeric and other plant compounds in inflammation, and the dangers of processed meats and trans fats. The book concludes with practical guidance on meal planning and a section addressing common questions about plant-based eating. It became a New York Times bestseller and is frequently cited in discussions of plant-based nutrition.
