Maya Angelou’s 1969 autobiography *I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings* is the first of seven memoirs tracing her life from early childhood to age seventeen. The book opens with three-year-old Maya and her older brother Bailey being sent alone by train from California to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, whom they call Momma. Momma runs the only Black-owned store in the segregated town, and Maya’s early years unfold against the rigid racial codes of the Jim Crow South, where she witnesses poverty, humiliating encounters with white townspeople, and the quiet dignity of her family and community. A central turning point occurs when eight-year-old Maya is raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman, in St. Louis. After she names him in court and he is killed, she becomes mute for nearly five years, believing her voice caused his death. Her recovery is aided by Mrs. Bertha Flowers, a cultured Black woman who introduces her to literature and encourages her to speak again. This episode, alongside her love of Shakespeare, Dickens, and African American writers, underpins the book’s title metaphor of the caged bird: a creature trapped by circumstance yet still singing. Later, Maya and Bailey move to San Francisco to live with their mother, Vivian, and her partner Daddy Clidell. Maya attends Mission High School, briefly works as the first Black streetcar conductor in San Francisco, and navigates adolescent insecurity. In the final chapters, she questions her sexuality, has a brief sexual encounter, and becomes pregnant at sixteen, giving birth to her son shortly after graduating. Angelou’s memoir blends lyrical prose with honest accounts of trauma, racism, displacement, and resilience.
