I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Maya Angelou’s 1969 autobiography *I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings* is the first of seven memoirs tracing her life from early childhood to age seventeen. The book opens with three-year-old Maya and her older brother Bailey being sent alone by train from California to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, whom they call Momma. Later, Maya and Bailey move to San Francisco to live with their mother, Vivian, and her partner Daddy Clidell. Maya attends Mission High School, briefly works as the first Black streetcar conductor in San Francisco, and navigates adolescent insecurity. In the final chapters, she questions her sexuality, has a brief sexual encounter, and becomes pregnant at sixteen, giving birth to her son shortly after graduating. Angelou’s memoir blends lyrical prose with honest accounts of trauma, racism, displacement, and resilience.
