Into the Water

Paula Hawkins’s novel *Into the Water* returns to the psychological-suspense territory of *The Girl on the Train*, but swaps commuter trains for a river that has claimed several women’s lives. The story centers on the drowning death of Nel Abbott in the river that runs through the small English town of Beckford, specifically at the bend known locally as the Drowning Pool. Nel had been writing a history of the women who died there, and her death—ruled a suicide—brings her estranged sister Jules back to the town she fled as a teenager, against her better judgment, to care for Nel’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Lena. The narrative unfolds through a rotating cast of first-person narrators, among them Jules, Lena, and several townspeople, interspersed with Nel’s own unfinished manuscript about the Drowning Pool. That layered structure lets Hawkins slowly expose the long history of violence against women tied to the site, including the story of accused witch Libby Seeton, while the present-day investigation raises the possibility that Nel was murdered. A key early discovery is the body of Katie Whittaker, a teenage girl and Lena’s closest friend, whose death may be connected to Nel’s: Lena believes a teacher, Mark Henderson, was involved with Katie, and the town’s suspicions swirl around several men, including Sean Townsend, the detective handling the case and the son of the local police sergeant. Beckford itself functions almost as a character, defined by the river, its vanished mill, and the lore of drowned women—women the novel repeatedly links to scapegoating and misogyny. Hawkins deliberately withholds the truth until the end, so the book is less a whodunit than a study of sisters, memory, and the stories a town tells to excuse itself.
