Just Mercy

Bryan Stevenson’s *Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption* (2014) is a legal memoir centered on his work founding the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, and his decades-long representation of people sentenced to death or condemned to extreme punishments. The book’s spine is the case of Walter McMillian, a Black man wrongly convicted of a 1986 murder in Monroeville, Alabama—the same town that markets itself as the home of Harper Lee—and sentenced to death largely through coerced testimony, racial bias, and a compromised investigation. Stevenson’s narrative alternates between this wrongful-conviction fight and other clients whose cases expose broader failures: children sentenced to life without parole, people with mental illness or intellectual disability facing execution, and defendants trapped by poverty and inadequate counsel. Two frameworks define the book. First, Stevenson argues that the opposite of poverty is not wealth but justice, showing how indigent defense systems and mandatory sentencing laws produce predictable cruelty. Second, he develops the idea of “proximity” and “mercy” as legal and moral commitments: getting close to the condemned and to their families, and resisting the idea that a person can be reduced to the worst thing they have done. The Equal Justice Initiative becomes both protagonist institution and witness, documenting how race, geography, and capital punishment intertwine in the Deep South. Stevenson also recounts his own family history and the psychological cost of representing people facing execution, including the execution of clients and the toll on his staff. The book helped fuel public conversation about mass incarceration, juvenile life without parole, and wrongful convictions, and it later inspired a 2019 film adaptation. Its distinctive contribution is not abstract legal theory but a case-driven argument that proximity to suffering changes how justice is pursued.
