Leadershift

In *Leadershift*, John C. Maxwell argues that the ability to adapt—what he calls "leadershift"—is the single most important skill separating leaders who sustain success from those who stall. The book, published in 2018, is organized around eleven specific shifts Maxwell says every leader must learn to make, each given its own chapter: from the Soloist to the Team Player, from Goals to Growth, from Perks to Price, from Pleasing People to Challenging People, from Maintaining to Creating, from Ladder Climbing to Ladder Building, from Directing to Connecting, from Career to Calling, and from Clock Watching to Priority Management, among others. Maxwell frames each shift as a deliberate transition in mindset and behavior rather than a one-time event, and he returns repeatedly to the idea that leaders must shift again and again because what worked at one stage of their influence will not work at the next. The book draws heavily on Maxwell's decades of teaching on leadership and on anecdotes from his own career, including his time as a pastor and his work running the John Maxwell Company and EQUIP, as well as stories about leaders he has coached or observed. He introduces the concept of the "Law of Diminishing Returns" as it applies to leadership habits—the notion that the very strengths that got a leader to one level can become liabilities if not adjusted. Each chapter typically ends with practical reflection questions and a call to identify which shift the reader most needs to make next. The overarching argument is that leadership is not a fixed trait but a continual process of trading old methods for new ones as responsibilities, teams, and contexts change. Maxwell positions the willingness to shift—not raw talent or charisma—as the decisive factor in long-term leadership effectiveness.
