Leadership Is Language

In Leadership Is Language, retired U.S. Navy captain L. David Marquet argues that the words leaders choose either enable or suppress their teams' thinking. The book is a follow-up to Marquet's earlier Turn the Ship Around! and draws its central case study from his time commanding the nuclear submarine USS Santa Fe, where he famously gave up issuing orders and instead asked his crew what they intended to do. These plays come paired with practical language shifts, such as replacing "why" questions with "what" and "how" questions, voting early to surface dissent, and separating the person who proposes an idea from the person who decides. Marquet illustrates these ideas with examples from the Santa Fe, from aviation and healthcare, and from business, showing how small changes in phrasing reduce hierarchy-driven silence and encourage crew members to voice concerns. The book also stresses the value of declaring a "pause" before high-stakes decisions and of treating errors as information rather than grounds for blame.
