Lean In

In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg combines personal narrative with research to examine why women remain underrepresented in leadership. Drawing on her experience as a top executive at Google and later Facebook, Sandberg argues that internal barriers—such as fear, self-doubt, and the tendency to hold back—often compound the external obstacles women face, and she urges women to “lean in” to their ambitions rather than pull back. Sandberg introduces several distinctive concepts. She describes the “leadership ambition gap,” noting that women often underestimate their abilities and attribute success to luck rather than skill. She critiques the tendency for women to worry about being liked, and she examines how women frequently scale back their career goals long before they have children, a pattern she calls “starting to lean back too early.” Other chapters address the myth of “having it all,” the importance of choosing a supportive partner, and the value of speaking up and negotiating. Sandberg also discusses the need for women to support one another rather than view each other as competitors, and she calls on men and employers to change workplace structures that disadvantage women. The book combines her own anecdotes—such as her early experiences at Google and Facebook—with social science research on gender, negotiation, and work. In later editions, she added a chapter on grief following the sudden death of her husband, Dave Goldberg. Lean In sparked widespread debate about whether its emphasis on individual action neglects systemic barriers. It remains a defining text in conversations about women, work, and ambition.
