Life of Pi

Yann Martel’s novel *Life of Pi* is narrated by Piscine Molitor Patel, a Canadian immigrant recalling his childhood in Pondicherry, India, where his family owned a zoo. Named after a Paris swimming pool, he shortens his name to Pi to escape schoolyard mockery. The novel opens with an Author’s Note framing the story as a real account told to Martel, then divides into three parts. Part One establishes Pi’s unusual upbringing: his father’s harsh zoological lessons about animal danger, his own experiments comparing Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, and his eventual decision to practice all three faiths simultaneously. Part Two, the novel’s core, begins after the Patel family sells the zoo and sails for Canada aboard a Japanese cargo ship. The vessel sinks in the Pacific, leaving sixteen-year-old Pi stranded on a lifeboat with a wounded zebra, an orangutan, a spotted hyena, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The hyena kills the zebra and orangutan before the tiger kills the hyena, leaving Pi alone with Richard Parker. Pi survives 227 days at sea using zoo knowledge, establishing territorial boundaries, and training the tiger through seasickness, reward, and dominance. He also encounters a floating island of algae and meerkats. Part Three presents Pi’s interrogation by Japanese insurance officials, to whom he offers a second, brutal story substituting humans for animals, asking which version the listener prefers. Martel’s central framework is this competing-narrative structure, exploring faith, storytelling, and survival.
