Living History

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s memoir Living History, published in 2003, covers her life from a middle-class Chicago childhood through her years as First Lady of the United States and her election as U.S. Senator from New York. The book opens with her upbringing in Park Ridge, Illinois, her time at Wellesley College, where she served as student government president and delivered a noted commencement speech in 1969, and her years at Yale Law School, where she met Bill Clinton. It follows their marriage and his political career in Arkansas, including his terms as governor and her work at the Rose Law Firm. The central thread is Clinton’s eight years in the White House, during which she led the Task Force on National Health Care Reform, advocated for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and traveled widely as a global representative for women’s and human rights. She describes the 1995 Beijing conference, where her speech declared that women’s rights are human rights. The memoir also addresses personal and political crises, including the Whitewater investigations, the death of her father, and the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which she discusses as a painful period in her marriage. The title reflects her argument that public figures are shaped by lived experience and that she sought to present her own account against the caricatures of her critics. The book became a bestseller, sold over a million copies, and its audio edition earned Clinton a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album in 2004.
