Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel Malibu Rising, published in 2021, unfolds largely over a single day: August 27, 1983, the date of the Riva family’s infamous annual end-of-summer party. The story centers on the four Riva siblings—Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit—children of fictional 1950s and ’60s surfing icon Mick Riva and his first wife, June. The novel alternates between the events of that chaotic party day and flashbacks tracing Mick and June’s marriage, the siblings’ childhoods, and the slow unraveling of their parents’ relationship across decades. The party itself functions as the book’s structural spine. As word spreads, hundreds of guests descend on the Riva mansion, and the gathering spirals from glamorous to destructive, mirroring the family’s buried tensions. Reid uses the countdown to the party’s end to build suspense, while the historical sections reveal how fame, abandonment, and loyalty shaped each sibling. The novel explores celebrity culture, sibling bonds, inherited trauma, and the cost of keeping a family’s secrets. It is set in a vividly rendered Malibu of surfboards, beach bonfires, and Hollywood adjacency. Reid has described the book as partly inspired by the idea of a single explosive party and by stories of famous families, and it became a bestseller and a Reese’s Book Club pick. A television adaptation was announced.
