In Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, counselor John Gray argues that the two sexes routinely misread each other because they operate by different emotional and communicative rules—as if they came from different planets. His central metaphor holds that men, the "Martians," define themselves through competence and achievement, while women, the "Venusians," define themselves through relationships and connection. Other recurring ideas include the notion that men are motivated by feeling needed and women by feeling cherished, and that unsolicited advice from a man can feel like invalidation to a woman seeking empathy. Gray's proposed remedy is "translating" each other's requests—decoding complaints as needs rather than attacks—and practicing "love letters" to process difficult feelings. The book is organized around these contrasts rather than a plot or cast, using composite anecdotes from Gray's counseling practice to illustrate each dynamic. It became a dominant pop-psychology relationship guide after its 1992 release and spawned a franchise of seminars and spin-off titles.
