Mere Christianity

C.S. Lewis’s *Mere Christianity* began as a series of BBC radio talks delivered during World War II and was published in book form in 1952. Lewis, an Oxford and Cambridge scholar and former atheist, frames the work not as denominational theology but as an argument for what he calls “mere” Christianity—the core beliefs shared across most Christian traditions. The book unfolds in four parts. Book One, “Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe,” develops the argument from a universal moral law: humans everywhere sense a standard of right and wrong they did not invent and often fail to follow. From this “Law of Nature,” Lewis reasons toward a moral Lawgiver. Book Two, “What Christians Believe,” moves through the rival conceptions of God, the problem of evil, and Lewis’s famous “trilemma”—that Jesus must be either liar, lunatic, or Lord. Book Three, “Christian Behaviour,” explores virtues (prudence, temperance, justice, fortitude), the cardinal and theological virtues, forgiveness, sexual morality, and the idea that morality concerns harmony between individuals and within the self. Book Four, “Beyond Personality,” discusses the Trinity, divine timelessness, and the Christian goal of being remade into the likeness of Christ, culminating in his image of humans as “statues” being chiseled or as living members of Christ’s body. Throughout, Lewis uses analogies—a fleet of ships sailing in formation, a house being built, an office with a clerk—rather than scripture or sectarian doctrine, aiming to persuade skeptics through reason and common moral experience. The book remains one of the most widely read popular works of Christian apologetics.
