Herman Melville’s *Moby-Dick* is a sprawling 1851 novel narrated by Ishmael, a wanderer who joins the whaling ship Pequod in Nantucket. Its captain, Ahab, has lost a leg to a legendary white sperm whale and sails with a secret purpose: vengeance against the creature. The book’s distinctive framework mixes adventure narrative with encyclopedic digressions. Ishmael devotes entire chapters to cetology—the classification of whales—as well as the anatomy of the sperm whale’s head, the meaning of the color white, and the craft of slicing blubber. He describes the crew’s diverse makeup, including the harpooners Queequeg of Kokovoko, Tashtego, and Daggoo, and the mysterious prophet Fedallah. Ahab’s quest is foreshadowed by Elijah’s warnings and by the doubloon he nails to the mast as a reward for the first man to spot the White Whale. The novel’s structure is famously non-linear: chapters of high drama alternate with essays on whaling tools, paintings, and fossils. Melville uses the Pequod as a miniature world, with its own hierarchy and rituals, while the vast Pacific setting underscores isolation and obsession. The whale itself remains ambiguous—both a natural animal and a symbol of ungovernable force. Major themes include the limits of knowledge, the nature of evil, and the conflict between free will and fate. The book draws on Melville’s own experiences aboard the whaler Acushnet, and its initial reception was mixed. Today it is considered a central work of American Romanticism and one of the most experimental novels of the nineteenth century.
