My American Journey

Colin Powell’s 1995 memoir *My American Journey*, written with Joseph E. Persico, traces his rise from a childhood in the South Bronx to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The book follows Powell through City College of New York, where he joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, and into a thirty-five-year Army career that included two tours in Vietnam, command of the 1989 invasion of Panama, and oversight of Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War. Powell organizes the narrative around his immigrant parents and the values of discipline and optimism he absorbed in a racially mixed neighborhood. He describes early frustrations with segregation while stationed in the South and later examines the political and military pressures inside the Pentagon, the Reagan and Bush White Houses, and the National Security Council. The memoir explains the Powell Doctrine, his public argument that the United States should commit force only with clear objectives, overwhelming strength, and an exit strategy. He also chronicles his time as National Security Advisor under Ronald Reagan, including the Iran-Contra affair and the Reykjavik summit, and his tenure as the youngest chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Powell writes candidly about the friction between military advice and civilian leadership, the Tailhook scandal’s aftermath, and the decision to end the Gulf War without removing Saddam Hussein from power. The final sections address his retirement, his consideration of a presidential run, and his 2001 appointment as Secretary of State. Throughout, he portrays his career as a test of whether American institutions could reward talent across racial and class lines.
