Nine Perfect Strangers

Liane Moriarty’s novel Nine Perfect Strangers is set at Tranquillum House, a remote health-and-wellness resort in rural Australia run by the enigmatic Russian-born director Masha Dmitrichenko. The nine guests who arrive for a ten-day retreat include Frances Welty, a romance novelist recovering from a bad review and a con-artist boyfriend; Ben and Jessica Chandler, a lottery-winning couple whose marriage is fraying; Heather and Napoleon Marconi, grieving parents; Tony Hogburn, a former football star; Carmel Schneider, a recently divorced mother; and Lars Lee, a cynical divorce lawyer. Each has signed up seeking transformation, but the retreat’s program grows increasingly extreme. Masha, a former corporate high-flyer who survived a heart attack and reinvented herself as a guru, pushes beyond the usual smoothies and yoga. Her methods include a mandatory silence, a personalized “noble truths” regimen, and—crucially—the secret lacing of the guests’ daily smoothies with a psychedelic drug intended to induce ego death and emotional breakthrough. The narrative alternates among the nine guests and Masha, plus staff members Yao and Delilah, revealing their private anxieties and secrets. Moriarty blends satire of the wellness industry with a slow-burn suspense plot: as the microdosing escalates and Masha’s control tightens, the strangers must decide whether her experiment is salvation or captivity. The novel explores grief, body image, marriage, and the commodification of healing, while keeping the question of who—if anyone—is truly dangerous at the center of the setup.
